The College has received confirmation from the State Department of Labs of the H1N1 influenza among our student campus population. Please be aware that this student recovered completely without any complications.

Juniata College continues to monitor the situation involving novel H1N1 influenza and will update the campus community whenever warranted.

The symptoms of H1N1 flu in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and may include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, body aches, diarrhea, cough and/or sore throat.

Like seasonal flu, H1N1 flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

All community members are encouraged to stay up to date with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/

Everyday actions people can take to stay healthy include:

  • Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat a well balanced diet. By following these habits you can help to keep your immune system at its best to fight off illness.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you do not have a tissue, cough into your elbow/upper sleeve. Do NOT cough into your hands and DO NOT cough into the air. ALWAYS COVER YOUR COUGH!
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Don't share beverages or eating utensils.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you are feeling ill:

Students who are experiencing flu-like symptoms should call the Health Center at (814) 641-3410. When possible and appropriate, the college will help students make arrangements for isolation at home or with a friend or relative off-campus. Contact the dean of students office for help making such arrangements.

Faculty and staff with flu-like symptoms should contact their health care provider to report illness by telephone before seeking care.

Persons who are at high risk of complications from influenza infection (for example, persons with certain chronic medical conditions or women who are pregnant) should consult their health care provider.

If you are ill:

Stay home from school, work, campus events and errands. Avoid close contact with other people. Students should know their class attendance policy and make alternate arrangements for missed assignments and exams.

Treat the symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat and muscle aches as you normally would. Use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen to combat the fever is fine. DO NOT use aspirin or anything with aspirin in it when you have the flu.

Rest and hydrate yourself with water, sports drinks and soup broth. Juniata's Residential Life and Food Service staffs will coordinate such amenities for students.

When fever is no longer present for 24 hours without the aid of fever-reducing medications you are safe to return to normal activity.

Those caring for an ill person should follow CDC guidelines for providing such care: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance_homecare.htm

The College will continue to monitor the H1N1 situation and information provided by the CDC, the World Health Organization, and state and local health authorities as it becomes available.
