BASEBALL (6-7, 1-2 Commonwealth): March 24 vs. Messiah* (2); March 25 at Messiah*; March 28 at Elizabethtown*; March 29 vs. Elizabethtown* (2); March 30 vs. Pitt-Bradford.

One game for the Eagles this week, and it was a tough one, as Juniata dropped a one-run decision to Gettysburg 7-6. A ninth-inning rally fell short for the Blue and Gold as the tying run was thrown out at the plate for the game's final out. Adam Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) led the Eagle offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs driven in, and a run scored. Marc Frailey (Middletown/Middletown), David Saintz (Titusville/Titusville), Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) and Kodi Hockenberry (Red Land/Lewisberry) each had a pair of hits for the Eagles. Saintz scored a pair of runs and drove in a run, while Goedkoop added one run. Nate Capp (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) started on the mound for Juniata, allowing only one earned run in four innings of work.

MEN'S TENNIS (1-2, 0-1 Commonwealth): March 24 at Messiah*; March 26 at Albright*; March 29 at Grove City; March 29 at Thiel; March 30 at Westminster.

Juniata won their first match of the season, and dropped another contest on the week. The win came at Goucher as Juniata won all but one singles match in the contest for the 6-1 win. The Eagles also dropped a 6-3 decision to Frostburg State. Scott Noerr (Lewistown/Lewistown) remained undefeated in singles competition on the season, as he won both his matches at the number five singles spot. Neil Eicher (Altoona/Altoona), Satoshi Kimura (L.B. Pearson College/Nasano, Japan), Dave Bullock (Central Bucks East/Jamison) and Jack Walfish (Spring-Ford/Royersford) each won singles matches against Goucher. Bullock and Eicher won a pair of doubles matches on the week, while Noerr and Kimura along with Walfish and Osman Homurlu (Tarsus American School/Cresson) won a lone doubles match on the week.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (12-6, 5-6 Commonwealth): March 26 vs. Penn State*; March 29 at NYU*; March 30 at Concordia*. *EIVA Tait Division match.


Three wins on the week for Juniata as they topped Tait Division foe Saint Francis 3-0, then beat Eastern Mennonite and Sacred Heart 3-1. The Eagles had a balanced offensive effort against Saint Francis, as Ryan Genova (Antietam/Reading) was the only Eagle in double figures with 10 kills along with five serve aces. Kenny Eiser (Central Bucks West/Doylestown) had seven kills and a team-best eight digs and five blocks. Nate Kincel (Penn Hills/Pittsburgh) had eight kills along with four blocks. Scott Kofmehl (North Allegheny/Pittsburgh) had 23 assists, while Ricky Ziegler (Northeastern/Manchester) added 13. Against Sacred Heart, Eiser led the offense with 16 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Also in double figures was Neil Lukas (Fairport, NY/East Windsor, N.J.) who had 11 kills and tied for a team high with nine digs. Libero Tim Cole (Pennsbury/Yardley) also had nine digs on the defensive side. Kofmehl passed out 51 assists in the win, while Chris Jones (Lower Merion/Wayne) knocked back a match high six blocks.

SOFTBALL (4-1, 0-0 Commonwealth): March 24 vs. Mt. Aloysius (2); March 27 at Alvernia (2); March 29 at Lebanon Valley* (2); March 30 vs. Widener* (2).

Juniata split a mid-week doubleheader at Mary Washington. The Eagles dropped game one of the two-game set 4-1, then got a complete game win from Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) to claim a 5-2 victory. The Eagles had five players get a hit in the win, with Leanne Leymeister (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg), Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) adding an RBI and a run scored in the win. Allison D'Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) also had an RBI in the victory. Gable allowed only two earned runs in five innings, with a strikeout. Leymeister led the charge offensively in the loss as well, with two hits in three at-bats. Hobbs added a base hit and a run batted in along with Amber Helsel (Claysburg-Kimmel/Claysburg) had a hit and a run scored. Lizzie Bartosik (Penn/Granger, In.) pitched six innings allowing four earned runs and striking out four.

TRACK & FIELD: March 26-27 at Florida Relay Decathalon; March 29 at Clarion Invitational.


On the first weekend of Juniata's outdoor track and field season the Eagles had a large number of top-10 finishes in a non-scoring meet at DeSales.The Eagle men were led by Dusty Lehr (Mermudian Springs/New Oxford) and Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York), who each earned top-10 finishes in multiple events. On the women's side, the Eagles depth was prevalent as the ladies claimed 35 top-10 honors including first-place finishes by Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) and Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) in the 400-meter and the javelin respectively. Lehr placed in four different events, earning a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. Shawn Miller (Altoona/Altoona) also grabbed a first-place finish for the Eagles, claiming first in the pole vault. Sheaffer finished third in the 1,500 meters and came across the line seventh in the 800 meters. Jeremy Weber (Garden Springs/Mohnton) tied for ninth in to 100-meter dash, while Jason Boyer (Indian Valley/Belleville) and John Boyer (Indian Valley/Belleville) placed sixth and seventh respectively in the triple jump. Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) and Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) placed sixth and seventh respectively in the 5,000 meters to round out the Eagles top-10 finishes. The Eagle women were dominant in the throwing events, but got contributions in a variety of different events. Juniata had 18 different competitors earn top-10 finishes. Rynkewtiz, Truotman and Betsey Kusniez (Boyertown/Gilbertsville) each had three top tens. Misty Heuston (Central Martinsburg), Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle/Greencastle), Cheryn Courtney (Mercer/Mercer), Jan Jennings (Pleasant Valley/Saylorsburg), Denise Showalter (Altoona/Altoona), Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.), Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg), Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte), Maria Welch (Jersey Shore/Avis) and Debbie Delaney (Franklin/Reisertown, Md.) all placed tenth or better in two events. The Eagles then had Carol Longnecker (Harrisonburg/Harrisonburg, Va.), Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.) and Stephanie Wasylyk (Honesdale/Uniondale) all garnered top-10s in one event to round out the Eagles performance.
