New Graduate Program Focuses on Complex Environmental Issues

HUNTINGDON, Pa.— Juniata College is pleased to announce the addition of a master of applied ecology and natural resource management to its graduate program offerings.
This in-person program joins the College’s graduate programs in accounting, business administration, bioinformatics, data science, education, and organizational leadership. The master of applied ecology and natural resource management is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and address the complex environmental issues facing our planet.
“Through a blend of scientific inquiry and hands-on practice, this cutting-edge master's program equips passionate individuals to address real-world environmental challenges,” said Uma Ramakrishnan, professor of environmental science and studies and chair of environmental science and studies. “It is a bridge between theory and action, cultivating experts who will forge sustainable solutions for our planet's future”
Designed for part-time and full-time students, the program aims to foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ethical and responsible environmental stewardship for future careers in environmental science and conservation. The coursework includes quantitative ecology, advanced GIS (Geographic Information System), drone applications, wildlife tracking, and watershed monitoring.
Through hands-on research projects and real-world case studies, students will develop the ability to analyze and interpret data, design experiments, and communicate their findings effectively. Students will also learn the importance of approaching ecological challenges with creativity and innovation to shape environmental policy and decision-making.
The master of applied ecology and natural resource management degree program is designed for individuals with bachelor’s degrees. Prerequisites include two biology courses, two chemistry courses, and a statistics course. Candidates for the program must have had a 3.0 grade point average during their undergraduate studies.
