HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at Juniata College will host its third International Symposium, “Toward Environmental Justice: Transition to a Sustainable Future,” on October 9–10, 2024, from 6-8:30 p.m. Free and open to the public, this event takes place at Juniata College in Alumni Hall, located in Brumbaugh Academic Center, 1700 Moore Street, Huntingdon.

The symposium brings together expert panelists from around the world to discuss the urgent global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and the pursuit of a just and sustainable future.

Rising temperatures, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and other extreme weather events are causing widespread disruptions in nature. The effects impact our environment, economies, productivity, human health, and well-being. Many countries on the frontline of climate change are already experiencing population displacement and environmental refugees. These mounting challenges, complex climate-induced global events, and their uncertainties and risks require profound understanding and analysis.

Symposium panelists will be Saleem Ali, Blue and Gold distinguished professor of energy and the environment at the University of Delaware; David Begay, associate research professor at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy; Gabriela Cuadrado Quesada, senior lecturer and researcher of water rights and justice at IHE Delft; Julia Marton-Lefèvre, the chair of the board of the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT; Youba Sokona, former vice chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and Fernando Treviño, special deputy secretary for environmental justice at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The symposium will provide a platform for dialogue and improve our shared understanding of the changing nature of global affairs.
