Juniata College

(Posted June 9, 2025)

HUNTINGDON, PA — In a major step toward addressing critical nursing shortages in central Pennsylvania, Juniata College announces that the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing has officially approved its new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The inaugural class of students will start in fall 2025.

“The approval of the nursing program is an important milestone for Juniata College,” said James A. Troha, president of Juniata College. “We recognized the urgent need for skilled nurses in central Pennsylvania, and through collaboration with faculty, staff, trustees, and generous donors, we have turned this vision into reality.”

Juniata College, ranked among the top 100 liberal arts and sciences institutions, has a long history of preparing students for successful careers in healthcare.

“Juniata’s signature strength in preparing students for careers in health professions makes us especially well-suited for a nursing program,” said Lauren Bowen, provost. “Now, Juniata College is poised to become a leader in rural nursing education, graduating highly educated professionals who are ready to serve our region and support the health of people in this region and beyond.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing is among the top 10 occupations expected to see the highest job growth over the next decade. Recognizing this demand, Juniata has designed a nursing curriculum that combines evidence-based teaching, clinical education, industry standards, and real-world experiences to prepare students for future careers.

Leading the program is Director of Nursing Jennifer DellAntonio, who emphasizes a hands-on, student-focused approach to education. “At Juniata College, we will develop compassionate, confident, and well-rounded nurses who are deeply committed to transforming healthcare,” said DellAntonio. “Our graduates will be prepared to navigate the evolving needs of patients and make a lasting impact on the community and on the field.”

State-of-the-Art Nursing Simulation Laboratory

In preparation for future nursing students, Juniata College has built an advanced nursing simulation laboratory, which is housed in its Sill Business Center. Featuring high-fidelity manikins that replicate real-life clinical scenarios, the lab allows students to hone their critical thinking, technological proficiency, and clinical judgment in a controlled, immersive environment. Students will learn how to master fundamental techniques and advance through complex patient care simulations with confidence.

Future Expansion: The Gateway Center

Juniata College has plans to relocate the nursing simulation lab next year to the Gateway Center, a transformative new facility that will be built on campus. This three-story, 24,100 square feet building will dedicate one floor to the nursing program, with the remaining floors housing healthcare offices. This unique integrated building will foster mentorship opportunities between students and practicing healthcare professionals, while expanding clinical training settings for students.

A public groundbreaking ceremony for the Gateway Center project was held on April 25, near the intersection of 17th and Moore Streets in Huntingdon.

Philanthropic Support

The launch of the BSN program was made possible in part by a generous $1 million gift from Juniata alumnus Dan Sunderland ’88 and his wife Kerry. Their philanthropy funded a feasibility study and the development of the nursing simulation lab, laying the foundation for the program’s success.
