Dr. Pat Bruno was presented with the William E. Swigart Alumni Humanitarian Award, which honors those who have improved the lives of others through personal sacrifice and have exercised significant leadership through vocation or avocation. Bruno was presented with the award for his selfless service to his community and beyond through his commitment to preventing child abuse and developing programs to evaluate and serve children who have been abused.
Following his graduation from Juniata, Dr. Bruno earned a master’s degree in physiology at Rutgers University and his Doctor of Medicine at the Penn State College of Medicine at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1972. He completed his pediatric residency at The Ohio State University and operated a solo general pediatric practice for 25 years before joining Geisinger Health System in 2004.
Until 2024, Dr. Bruno served as medical director and child abuse pediatrician at the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Central Susquehanna Valley in Sunbury, Pa., and the director of the Division of Child Safety and Advocacy at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital of the Geisinger Health System. He continues to work in general pediatrics and child abuse pediatrics while serving as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Over the course of his career, Dr. Bruno has evaluated and treated more than 6,000 children referred for a child maltreatment evaluation. Furthermore, he has testified in many counties in the Commonwealth on behalf of child maltreatment victims.
As a general pediatrician in Sunbury, Dr. Bruno began seeing child maltreatment referrals because Northumberland County reported four times the state’s per capita rate of child abuse cases. He sought additional training and, with the help of his community, created Pennsylvania's first Center for Child Protection where children could have forensic interviews and be evaluated for child maltreatment in a child-friendly environment. He served as medical director of the Center for Child Protection at the former Sunbury Community Hospital and as a member of the board of trustees and chief of staff for the same institution. During this time, he was also a member of staff at the Evangelical Community Hospital and Geisinger Medical Center, all while caring for patients within his private pediatrics practice. As Pediatric Rural Health Coordinator for the State of Pennsylvania from 1984 to 1998, Dr. Bruno advocated for rural health development and education opportunities at the local, state, and federal levels.
Dr. Bruno is a certified member and fellow of the American Board of General Pediatrics and is board certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics. He has shared his expertise on the subject of child abuse prevention by lecturing medical students and residents, through presentations, panel discussions, and legislative testimony on more than 70 occasions. Dr. Bruno is the author of “How Can I Not?: Reflections on a Life Evaluating and Treating Victims of Child Maltreatment.”
He has been twice recognized with the Thomas Paine Award for Journalism from the Central Susquehanna ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) in 2013 and 2019, and the Dr. Chuck Fasano Memorial Red Cross Award for Medical Heroes in 2014. Dr. Bruno was named Sunbury Citizen of the Year by the Sunbury Rotary Club in 2016.
David A. Corman was presented with the Harold B. Brumbaugh Alumni Service Award, which honors those who have distinguished themselves above others as having given of their time to projects or functions of an elected or appointed position for the advancement of Juniata College. Corman received this award in recognition of his selfless and unwavering service to his alma mater with contagious energy and loyalty.
For nearly 30 years, Corman has been a dedicated donor with much of his philanthropy directly enriching the student experience through scholarships and the arts. Beyond his personal contributions, he has been an advocate for annual giving, inspiring his classmates to give back while serving as a Class Fund Agent and Class Engagement Team Member for many years.
Corman has been a key member of the Class of 1977 Reunion Committee since 2006, when the class began planning its 30-year reunion. His commitment to community and celebration continues to strengthen class bonds and alumni engagement with the College.
From 2004 to 2010, Corman served on the Alumni Council, where his peers recognized his leadership by electing him to the role of vice president. He went on to serve as president, past president, and chair of the Awards & Nominations Committee. In these roles, he focused on communication and strategic plan development, outreach to students and regional alumni groups, and increased visibility of Alumni Association programs.
Corman’s influence has extended across campus life as well. His energy and volunteerism have enriched events like Alumni Weekend, Homecoming, Juniata Career Day, Senior Salute, the Senior Class Dinner, and numerous student networking events. He also shared his insights and experiences as a panelist for the Beyond Tolerance Series, speaking to students on the theme “The Difference Juniata Makes.”
In addition to these contributions to the Alumni Association, Corman devoted a decade to cultivating a thriving alumni community in the Washington, D.C., metro area. As a member, and twice president, of the JC-DC Leadership Team, he attended more than 100 regional alumni events, helping to organize and elevate many of them.
