Will Koeppen, a senior at Juniata College studying geology/physics and the son of Thomas and Nancy Lee Koeppen of Oostburg, Wis., received a three-year graduate research fellowship for Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. to pursue a doctorate in geoscience and remote sensing.

For each year of the fellowship, Koeppen will receive an $24,000 stipend for living expenses as well as a tuition waiver for the program in Washington's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

Koeppen, 21, will study at the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, a consortium of Washington University faculty, research staff and students from various science programs within the university.

Koeppen spent the 1999-2000 academic year in Cochin, India, studying at the Cochin University of Science and Technology. He also worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. in the summer of 2000. His duties included analyzing photographs taken of the surface of Mars.

Koeppen has been actively involved in a variety of clubs and organizations in his four years at Juniata. He served as secretary of the Habitat for Humanity Club and as treasurer of the Conservation Club in the 1998-1999 academic year. He also served as vice president of the pep band.

He was a member of the Juniata College Water Quality Steering Committee, the Juniata College Recycling Committee, the Environmental Science Society and the Ultimate Frisbee Club. He also is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the honorary physics society.
