The Spanish & Hispanic Cultures program enables students to build functional proficiency in Spanish and to expand their knowledge and understanding of Hispanic cultures.

This program prepares students for graduate work in Spanish-related fields as well as for a variety of domestic and international employment opportunities. Many students choose interdisciplinary study, combining this program with fields including business, criminal justice, education, environmental science/studies, health and allied health professions, international relations, international studies, peace and conflict studies, pre-law, and social work.

    Catherine Jarvis

    Spanish and Hispanic Cultures and Social Work

    In Mexico, Catherine worked with two social workers to help investigate cases of elder and child abuse and neglect and conduct socioeconomic interviews for clients seeking other social support. She was trained to fill out forms and complete reports in Spanish. Catherine learned to maintain professionalism under difficult circumstances, to practice empathy, and to investigate a case. She learned about the strength and courage required for social work. Initially nervous to work in a new field with an unfamiliar organization, she was surprised by how much she enjoyed working with her friendly, patient colleagues and the sense of belonging they offered. Catherine is proud of herself for venturing outside of her comfort zone and the help she was able to provide people along the way
