Mansfield State 4, Juniata 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? An early goal gave the visitors a cushion, and the Juniata women?s soccer team was never able to get into a rhythm as the Eagles dropped its season opener 4-0 to Mansfield State in Huntingdon Wednesday afternoon. Juniata falls to 0-1, while Mansfield is now 2-0.

The visitors out-shot Juniata 8-1 in the first half as they ran out to a 3-0 lead. Anita Valerio put the Mountaineers on top in the 14th minute as her shot deflected of Juniata defender Emily Miller (Penns Valley/Coburn) and past Eagle keeper Lindsey Treon (Hollidaysburg/Duncansville).

Colleen Corcoran then put the visitors up 2-0 with her first goal of the game just eight minutes before halftime. A penalty shot gave Mansfield its third goal as Megan Colby converted after Juniata defender Emily Endres (Warren/Warren) took down an attacker in the box just three minutes before intermission. Treon made two saves in the first to keep the Eagles in the game.

The Blue and Gold turned up the defense in the second half, and pressured early in an effort to cut into the lead. Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Hanover) notched a pair of shots on goal in the second half, forcing Julie Miller to make a pair of saves to preserve the shutout. Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.) also posted a shot on goal, but Miller was up to the task as she kept Juniata off the scoreboard.

Corcoran then capped the scoring with a goal in the 62nd minute as she beat Treon for the second time, this time off a rebound and scramble in the box.

Treon was solid in the second half, making six saves on eight shots as she kept the Eagles within striking distance.

Juniata will look to break into the win column over the weekend as the Eagles compete in a tournament at LaRoche College.
