Huntingdon, PA - Juniata College senior goalkeeper Melonie Sappe' (Dallas/Shavertown) has been named the Commonwealth Conference goalkeeper/defensive field hockey player of the week for the week ending September 4. Sappe' helped Juniata a perfect 3-0 record on the week to open the 2004 season.

Sappe' started the year off with a shutout as Juniata blanked Neumann College for a 1-0 victory. The senior goalie made eight saves in helping Juniata to the season-opening victory. She then played 57 scoreless minutes in the cage as Juniata posted a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia Biblical. But her top performance may have come in a win over non-conference foe Muhlenberg. Sappe' made 11 saves to preserve a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods. She then saved all five penalty strokes during the penalty shootout to secure a 2-1 Juniata win. Sappe' finished the week with a 3-0 record, 19 saves and a goals against average of 0.32.

Sappe' is in her fourth season as Juniata's starting keeper. She already holds the program record for shutouts in a season and a career. She was an All-Conference selection as a sophomore and last season posted a 1.04 goals against average and a .788 save percentage.

Juniata is off to a 3-0 start and is coming off a season in which Juniata established a new program record for wins in a season. The Eagles finished 15-8 in 2004, and advanced to the Commonwealth Conference championship match. Juniata returned three players to this season's squad who have earned All-Conference recognition during their careers.
