Juniata 1, Lycoming 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Junior Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Hanover) scored to break a 0-0 tie with less than 10 minutes remaining as the Juniata College women?s soccer team topped non-conference foe Lycoming 1-0 in Huntingdon Wednesday afternoon. Juniata improved its record to 3-4-1 on the season, while Lycoming fell to 4-2.

McLellan knocked home her fourth goal of the season off a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box. She fired the ball into the upper right-hand corner of the box to break the scoreless tie at the 80:40 mark of the second half.

Juniata would then hold on as the Warriors pressured the Eagle net on several occasions in the final ten minutes. Juniata keeper Lisa Ruso (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) was up to the task, making a number of saves in the final minutes en route to earning her first career shutout.

Though the Eagles controlled much of the first half, neither team managed significant scoring chances. Juniata?s best chance came in the ninth minute when forward Lindsey Garvey (Willsboro Central/Essex, N.Y.) saw her header slide just past the post. Though it was necessary on that shot, Lycoming keeper Jessica Bennett was forced to make four of her five saves in the first half.

The second half saw the Warriors get the better of the chances as they pressured Ruso into three of her four saves in the final 45 minutes. Beth Weixel, Amanda Rinesmith and Danielle Curry each had two shots for the Warriors and Angie Conklin forced the final save of the match to ice the win.

The Eagle women have now won three of their last four outings after starting the season 0-3-1. McLellan has been particularly hot during the stretch, scoring each of her four goals in the past three games.

Juniata will be back in action on Saturday when the team hosts Lincoln in another non-conference outing.
