Clarion 9, Juniata 0

Huntingdon, Pa.? The matches were closer, but the Juniata College women?s tennis team was still unable to claim its first victory as the Eagles fell 9-0 to Clarion University in Huntingdon Friday afternoon. The Eagles fell to 0-5 with the loss, while Clarion is now 5-1.

Juniata nearly earned a point in several doubles matches, particularly at the third doubles position. Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) and Megan Carpenter (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) forced a tie-breaker before falling 9-8 overall and 7-2 in the tie-break. Anita Desai (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) and Jenny Liu (Pennsville Memorial/Deep Water, N.J.) dropped an 8-4 doubles decision at the second position, while Elizabeth Cooney (Forest Hills/South Fork) and Jenna Taylor (Pequea Valley/Narvon) suffered an 8-1 set-back at the first position.

The Eagles were also competitive on the singles court but were unable to capture a point. Liu put forth the strongest effort before falling 6-3, 6-4 at third singles. Taylor fought to a 6-4, 6-1 loss at fourth singles and Cooney dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match at the second position. Coursey fell 6-1, 6-0 at the first position, Desai suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss at fifth singles, and Carpenter dropped her match 6-0, 6-0 at the sixth spot.

Juniata will look for its first win on Saturday when the team takes on non-conference foe Lycoming.
