Juniata 1, Elizabethtown 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season with slightly more than three minutes remaining in regulation to propel the Juniata College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Elizabethtown in Huntingdon on Wednesday afternoon. The victory improved Juniata?s record to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while the Blue Jays slipped to 3-11 for the season and 1-3 in conference play.

Juniata?s four conference wins match the team?s regular season total from 2003 when the Eagles advanced to the Commonwealth Conference Championship. Juniata?s 8-1 start is the best record the team has ever enjoyed through nine games, and has moved the Eagles to ninth in the most recent STX/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll.

Wagner?s goal came with just 3:43 showing on the game clock. The freshman beat Elizabethtown keeper Kristin Callaghan for her third conference goal of the year. The Eagles would not allow the visitors a shot in the final three minutes to hang on for the victory.

The match was a tight, defensive contest throughout as the two teams combined for just 13 shots. Juniata fired off eight shots in the match, forcing Callaghan into four saves. Eagle keeper Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) faced five shots and made three saves in earning her fourth shutout, and third in her last three games. Juniata has not allowed a goal in the last 285 minutes of game action, all which has come with Sappe? in the cage.

The Eagles did exert pressure throughout the match, as they induced 12 penalty corners to just two for the visiting team.

Juniata will return to action on Saturday when the Eagles travel to take on conference foe Moravian.
