Juniata 2, Moravian 1 (2OT)

Bethlehem, Pa. ? Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) continued her stellar freshman season scoring two goals, including the game-winner in double overtime to propel the Juniata College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Moravian College in Bethlehem Saturday afternoon. The win ups Juniata?s record to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Moravian fell to 7-5 on the season, and 1-4 in the Commonwealth Conference.

Wagner scored her second goal of the match with 12:32 left in the second overtime period. The freshman took a pass from Meredith Low (Sun Valley/Aston) and beat the keeper to earn the victory in the sudden-death overtime period.

The win marked the third time this season the Eagles have earned a win either in overtime or on penalty strokes. The Eagles are 5-1 this season in one-goal games, and the win this afternoon was the team?s third consecutive one-goal win. Two of the three came either in overtime or on penalty strokes.

It looked as though overtime wouldn?t be necessary for much of the match, as Juniata out-shot the home team 19-9 in regulation. The Eagles posted nine shots to Moravian?s one in the first half, and that?s when the Eagles got on the scoreboard. This time Wagner collected a feed from Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs) and knocked home her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Eagle goalkeeper Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) was strong again in goal for the Eagles, keeping Moravian at bay until the final minute. Then, with 58 seconds remaining in regulation Savannah Bayer scored her seventh goal of the year off a feed from Stacee Cupples to knot the score and send the match into overtime.

Sappe? would make one save in the overtime sessions, giving her three stops for the match. The Eagles peppered Moravian goalie Amanda Gaun with 11 shots in overtime, forcing her to make six of her 12 saves in the extra sessions.

The game winning goal came in the 88th minute of action in the match.

Juniata will look to win its fifth-consecutive match on Sunday as the Eagles host Washington and Lee. With just one conference match remaining on the schedule, the Eagles have likely secured a spot in the Commonwealth Conference postseason for the second consecutive season.
