Elizabethtown 90, Juniata 72
Elizabethtown, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s basketball team had seen its offensive production increase over the past three games, which coincided with the team?s three-game winning streak. After scoring 41 points in the first half against Elizabethtown College Tuesday night, the Eagles offense cooled off as Juniata (5-8) dropped a 90-72 decision to the Blue Jays (8-6) in Elizabethtown.
The Eagles dropped to 0-3 in the Commonwealth Conference, while Elizabethtown is now 2-1 in conference play. Tommy McConnell (Bishop Guilfoyle/Hollidaysburg) scored 14 points to lead the Eagles. He also paced the team with four assists. Aaron Chamberlain (Tussey Mountain/Wood) was also in double figures with 11, while Travis Boyd (Juniata Valley/Barree) grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Kyle Conrad scored a game-high 23 points for the Blue Jays who had four other players in double figures. Greg Adams scored 15 points with Andrew Flynn adding 14 points and nine rebounds. Brian Schreiber scored 12, with Jon Connor chipping in 11. Adams also had a game-high five assists.
Juniata shot 50-percent from the field in the first half, as the Eagles rallied from an early eight-point deficit. Trailing 15-9 midway through the first, Juniata posted a 14-4 run to climb in front by six. Chamberlain and McConnell each had threes during the run. A lay-up from Neil Holloway (Tussey Mountain/Saxton) extended the margin to eight with 6:36 left in the half. Juniata held the advantage for the reminder of the half, though the Blue Jays tied the score at 38 before Brian Cannon (Fallston/Fallston, Md.) converted a three-point play to send the teams into the locker room with the Eagles on top 41-38.
The game turned five minutes into the second half with the score 48-46 in favor of Elizabethtown. The Eagles then went cold from the field over the next five minutes as Elizabethtown put together a 17-4 run which brought the lead to 15.
Juniata would claw back within eight four times in a two minute stretch late in the half and then pulled within seven after a free throw from Chamberlain with 4:56 left. The Blue Jays then answered with eight-straight points to put the game away.
The Eagles will look to get back in the win column on Thursday when they host Grove City in a non-conference tilt.
