Elizabethtown 75, Juniata 62

Elizabethtown, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s basketball team outscored Elizabethtown 34-33 in the second half and shot 62-percent from the field, but it wasn?t enough to overcome a 14-point first half deficit as the Eagles suffered a 75-62 loss at Elizabethtown Wednesday night. Juniata is now 4-9 on the year and 0-3 in the conference while the Blue Jays improved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference.

Jess Winemiller (Dallastown/York) poured in a game-high 23 points for Juniata, while also leading the team with seven rebounds and six steals. The 23-point performance was one shy of her season high as she was an impressive 10-of-12 from the field. Katie O?Brien (Southwestern/Hanover) was also in double figures with 10 points, while Courtney Callas (Freeport/Sarver) tossed out a team-high five assists.

Elizabethtown had four players in double figures, with Erin Walton pacing the team with 21 points and seven rebounds. Jen Roberts finished with 16 points, while Cristin Braun added 12 points. Megan Wolfe chipped in 11 points while dishing out a game-high six assists.

The Eagles started the second half quickly, looking to make up the 14-point halftime deficit. Ali Meckey (Bishop Carroll/Ebensburg) began the half with a bucket, then saw Winemiller score a pair of baskets to cut the lead to six four minutes into the half. After the two teams traded baskets Elizabethtown reeled off a 14-3 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 17-point edge.

Juniata responded promptly with baskets from Winemiller, O?Brien and Callas to pull back within 11. That was as close as the two teams got the rest of the way, despite Juniata?s 62-percent shooting.

Elizabethtown led from the start, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead. The Eagles would climb back to within one after a hoop from Mindy Werner (West York/York) with 10:37 left in the first half. Elizabethtown answered with a quick 9-0 run that pushed the lead back into double figures.

Juniata will look to get back into the win column when the Eagles return to the court on Saturday as they welcome Commonwealth opponent Moravian.
