Basketball Women Fall To Moravian
(Posted January 15, 2005)
Moravian 76, Juniata 57
Huntingdon, Pa. ? Another strong shooting game was not enough to help the Juniata College women?s basketball team earn its first conference win of the season as the Eagles (4-10, 0-4) dropped a 76-57 decision to Moravian College (12-2, 4-0) in Huntingdon Saturday evening.
Both teams turned in strong shooting performances, and struggled holding on to the ball as both teams topped 41-percent shooting and combined to commit 69 turnovers in the game. Juniata shot 41-percent from the field, but were unable to limit second shots for the visitors, and could not keep Moravian off the free throw line. Juniata was out-rebounded 46-25 on the game, and the visitors out-scored Juniata 20-4 at the foul line.
Jess Winemiller (Dallastown/York) scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Eagles in the contest. Katie O?Brien (South Western/Hanover) added 14 points with six rebounds of her own. Courtney Callas (Freeport/Sarver) and Mindy Werner (West York/York) each passed out three assists.
Moravian had three players in double figures with Rachel Berlin pacing the team with 19 points. Jenny Hackleman added 17 points, while Stephanie Seaman chipped in 10 points and 14 rebounds. Hackleman was tops on the team with three assists while Berlin finished with six steals.
Juniata never led in the game, as the Greyhounds took an early 15-6 advantage with 13:32 left in the first half. Juniata would hang tough, keeping Moravian within reach as a basket from O?Brien brought the lead back to nine with 8:00 in the half. The visitors answered and pushed the lead to 19 after Hackleman converted an offensive rebound with two minutes to go.
The edge stayed in double figures throughout the second half, though Juniata mounted a late run inside 10 minutes left in the game. Juniata put together an 8-0 run after three straight baskets, to cut the lead to 12 with 6:36 remaining. It was still within 14 with 3:40 left before Moravian put it away with a 6-0 run to bring the lead back to 20.
Juniata returns to action on Wednesday when the Eagles host Commonwealth Conference opponent Susquehanna.
