Arcadia 17, Juniata 10
DeSales 3, Juniata 1

Chandler, Ariz. ? The Juniata College baseball team?s six-game winning streak came to a halt Thursday as the Eagles dropped a pair of games in Chandler Ariz. Juniata fell to Arcadia by a 17-10 score a mistake-plagued contest, and then lost a pitcher?s dual to DeSales by a 3-1 margin. The Eagles are now 6-3 on the year.

Against Arcadia the Eagles offense managed 10 runs and 12 hits, but the team was let-down by its defense as the Blue and Gold committed five errors which led to 13 unearned runs for Arcadia.

The Eagles fell behind early as Arcadia scored a run in the first, and then pushed across four runs in the top of the second. Juniata rallied with a run in the third, and then moved in front for the first time with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. David Saintz? (Titusville/Titusville) two-RBI double was the big blow in the inning, while Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) and Will Russell (Tyrone/Tyrone) each added RBI singles.

Arcadia answered quickly, plating two runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one. The visitors then took the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning, which included a pair of unearned runs. The four runs gave Arcadia an 11-8 lead.

Despite two more Juniata runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Saintz and an RBI single from Goedkoop, Arcadia pulled away as they scored in each of the final three innings to pull away.

Juniata used five different pitchers in the game, though none of the five allowed more than three earned runs. Eric Bridenbaugh (Central/Martinsburg) was saddled with the loss. Andrew Snyder (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) got the start for Juniata and threw four and two-third innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He fanned five in the game.

Saintz and Goedkoop both had three hits in the game with Saintz adding three RBI and three runs scored. Russell and Zach Sternberg (McCaskey/Lancaster) both finished with two hits in the game.

Hits were at a premium in Juniata?s second game as Eagle starting pitcher Jayme Fye (Philipsburg-Osceola/Philipsburg) matched DeSales starter Matt Reppert in a classic pitcher?s dual.

Despite Fye tossing seven and two-thirds innings and striking out a career-high 13 batters, Juniata?s offense could not provide enough punch against Reppert as the Eagles fell 3-1.

Fye surrendered one run in the second, and then lone runs in the seventh and eighth despite giving up just nine hits.

After falling behind 1-0, the Eagles rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) singled to start the frame, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jason Enoch (Hempfield/Landisville) followed with a single to drive in Beaver and tie the score.

But that was as much offense as the Eagles could muster as Reppert allowed just seven hits while striking out five in nine innings of work.

Jeff Hayes (Indian Valley/Lewistown) pitched the final inning and a third for Juniata and did not allow a base runner.

Enoch, Sternberg and Beaver all finished with two hits for the Blue and Gold.

Juniata will return to action on Friday as the Eagles play two games against Beloit College.
