Greensburg, Pa. ? The Juniata College softball team got back on the winning track behind a pair of sparkling pitching performance from Kim Stoia (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) and Jessica Darrow (Wellsboro/Wellsboro) as the Eagles earned 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Pitt-Greensburg in doubleheader action Friday in Greensburg. Juniata brought its record to 8-8-1 with the wins, while the Bobcats fell to 3-13 with the losses.
Juniata limited the home team to just five hits in the doubleheader, while pounding out 19 hits of their own in the two games.
Game one belonged to Stoia as she claimed her team-high fourth win of the season as she limited Pitt-Greensburg to three hits in seven innings of work. It was the freshman?s first career shutout as she struck out seven batters.
Juniata gave the Stoia all the support she needed with a run in the top of the first. Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) led off with a single, and came home on a sacrifice fly from Abby Sener (Donegal/Marietta) to give Juniata a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles extended the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Danielle Buzin (Central Bucks East/Jamison) singled and scored on an error. Stoia then helped her own cause with an RBI single to give Juniata a 3-0 edge.
The home team?s biggest threat came in the fifth. A hit, an error and a walk loaded the bases with two out, but Stoia fanned the final batter to get out of the jam.
Wagner finished the game 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles, while Stoia added a pair of hits.
In game two, Darrow added Juniata?s second strong pitching performance as she went five innings allowing just two hits to claim the victory. Lizzie Bartosik (Penn/Granger, In.) worked the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
Juniata scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings as the Blue and Gold pounded out 11 hits. Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) got Juniata started in the first with a one-out triple, which was followed by an RBI single from Allison D?Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg). It was the same story in the third with Hobbs? second triple of the game followed by another RBI single from D?Ambrosia to put Juniata in front 2-0.
Juniata was the beneficiary of a pair of errors in the fourth which led to an unearned run. Hobbs capped the scoring in the seventh when she led off with a single and came home on an RBI single from Sener.
Hobbs paced the Eagle offense as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. D?Ambrosia also had three hits with a pair of RBI, and Sener added two hits in the game.
Juniata will get back in action on Tuesday when the Eagles resume conference play with a doubleheader at Commonwealth foe Elizabethtown.
