Huntingdon, Pa. ? After a tough extra-inning conference loss in its last game, the Juniata College baseball team needed something to change its momentum heading into the second half of the season. The Eagles got exactly that as Jason Enoch (Hempfield/Landisvill) and Cody Zong (Lewistown/McVeytown) each tossed complete-game shutouts to propel Juniata to a doubleheader sweep of Lebanon Valley in Huntingdon Tuesday afternoon.
Juniata won game one 4-0 with Enoch on the hill, and earned a 7-0 win in game two behind Zong?s effort. The Eagles improved to 16-9 overall and 8-4 in the Commonwealth, while Lebanon Valley slipped to 11-8 on the year and 3-6 in the conference.
Enoch worked his way through some jams en route to his second victory of the season. The freshman allowed 10 base runners in the game, and had runners at first and second in both the second and third innings, but made it through unscathed. He surrendered six hits and struck out seven in the game.
Juniata gave its hurler all the support he needed in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Dan Kauffman (Penn Manor/Conestoga) roped a double to right. After a foul pop-up that could have ended the inning was misplayed, Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) walked, and Will Russell (Tyrone/Tyrone) promptly drove in both runs with a double to right-center.
The Eagles added two more runs of Lebanon Valley starter Robert Nordall in the third. David Saintz (Titusville/Titusville) doubled to start the inning. Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) dropped in a bunt single, and after a stolen base, Goedkoop ripped a double to left that plated both runners.
Nordall settled in from there, as he didn?t allow a base runner in the final three innings. He surrendered just six hits and fanned three for the game. The visitors put two runners on in both the fifth and seventh, but could not break through against Enoch
Russell finished game one 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
As good as Enoch was in game one, Zong may have been better in the finale. The junior lefty took a perfect game into the sixth inning, before a lead-off single from Kyle Johansen gave the Flying Dutchmen their first base runner. Zong went the distance for the second-consecutive start, allowing just two hits and striking out four to earn his fourth win of the year. It was his third complete game against a conference foe this season.
Juniata?s offense got started quickly as the Eagles pushed across four runs in the first. Starter Craig Denlinger walked the bases loaded with none out. After an infield error brought in the first run, Goedkoop slammed his third home run of the season to clear the bases.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the third, as singles from Russell and Zach Sternberg (McCaskey/Lancaster) put runners at first and third with one out. Darren Hake (Red Lion/Red Lion) followed with an RBI single to put Juniata in front 5-0. Goedkoop then put the finishing touches on his day when he drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to put the Eagles on top 7-0.
Goedkoop finished 2-for-4 in the second game, with five RBI. Russell also added a pair of hits.
Juniata will return to action on Friday when the Eagles host conference foe Albright for a single game.
