(Posted September 2, 2005)
Gettysburg, Pa. ? The Juniata College cross country teams opened their season with a pair of solid performances, but finished with a split of a dual-meet at Gettysburg as the Eagles? women topped the Bullets 23-32 but the men dropped a tight 26-29 decision. Juniata earned the top finish in each race as Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) claimed the women?s race, while Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) finished first in the men?s race.
On the men?s side Sheaffer was the races top finisher as he posted a time of 16:53 while also running a 5K race. Gettysburg followed with the next three runners before Juniata?s Mike Chirdon (Riverview/Verona) crossed the line in fifth place as Juniata?s second-place finisher. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) was right behind Chirdon as he placed sixth, while Shawn Rumery (Thornton Academy/Dayton, Me.) was three seconds back of Vella and claimed seventh place. Juniata?s final scoring runner was Eric Hoover (Brandywine/Wilmington, Del.) who finished tenth, just 16 hundredths of a second out of ninth position.
Hayes paced Juniata to the victory as she covered the 5K course in a time of 21:12. Finishing a mere second behind her and earning a second-place finish was Juniata senior Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte). Gettysburg earned the next two spots before freshman Aubrey Cyphert (Seneca/Northeast) claimed a fifth-place finish in her first collegiate race. Fellow freshman Meghan Jones (Meadville/Meadville) was just nine seconds behind her classmate and crossed the line in sixth place. Completing the scoring for the Eagles was Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) who slid in just inside the top-10 as she placed ninth in a time of 22:05.
Juniata?s next competition will come Saturday Sept. 10 when the Eagles run at Connecticut College.
