Penn State-Behrend 3, Juniata 1
Erie, Pa. ? A pair of first half goals proved to be the difference as the Juniata College men?s soccer team dropped its season opening match to Penn State-Behrend by a 3-1 score. Juniata will play Baldwin-Wallace in the consolation match of the Penn State-Behrend Tournament, while the hosts will take on Washington & Jefferson in the Championship match.
The home team jumped on Juniata early in the first half as Brent Gailey scored just seven minutes into the contest. Mark Cipriani was credited with the assist.
It was Penn State-Behrend adding to the lead at the 34:08 mark when DJ Craven beat Juniata keeper Tim Penrod (Moravia/Moravia, N.Y.) with an unassisted goal. Penrod finished with one save in the first half.
The Eagles made it a match with increased pressure in the second half. The Blue and Gold fired off three shots in the first 45 minutes, and then added three more in the second half, but also forced three corner kicks in the final half.
That pressure paid off in the 56th minute when Kenneth Wiles (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck, N.Y.) took a feed from Josh Cady (Malvern Prep./Frazer) and beat the keeper for Juniata?s first goal of the season.
Juniata continued to pressure looking for the equalizer, but that opened up the defense and Penn State-Behrend took advantage as Marcus Taylor came free and added a final goal with just less than four minutes remaining.
Penrod finished with a pair of saves in goal, while Penn State-Behrend keeper Matt Zirnsak was forced into four saves by Juniata?s offense.
