Marietta 2, Juniata 0

Altoona, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s soccer team played well enough to win its opening round game at the Lions Soccer Invitational against Marietta Saturday afternoon, but the bounces did not go the Eagles? way as they fell by a 2-0 score. The Eagles are now 0-3-1 on the season and will take on Penn State-Altoona in the consolation match of the tournament on Sunday.

Despite controlling play throughout much of the game, Juniata was unable to capitalize on its offensive chances to break through on the scoreboard. After Marietta scored a pair of early goals put Marietta in front the Eagles? defense locked down their opponent, limiting the team to just one shot in the second half.

But the early goals were the difference as Jessica Martinez put Marietta in front just slightly more than a minute into the match when her cross attempt was off target but found its way into the Juniata net. Kelly Lehosit was credited with an assist on the goal.

Marietta scored again 11 minutes later as Allison Williams found the back of the net in the 13th minute to give Marietta the 2-0 lead.

The two tallies were the only two shots on goal that Marietta managed in the contest, while Juniata forced Marietta keeper Bethany Blahnik into a pair of saves. Juniata also earned a pair of corner kicks in the final 45 minutes, but were unable to find the net to cut into the lead.

Juniata?s defense continued its strong start to the 2005 season, as the Eagles have not allowed more than two goals in any of their first four outings.

The game was a sharp contrast to last season?s meeting between Juniata and Marietta in the Lions Soccer Invitational when Marietta topped the Eagles 5-0.
