William Patterson 2, Juniata 1

Wayne, N.J. ? In a nearly completely even game, a late goal and a key save were the difference as the Juniata College field hockey team suffered a 2-1 set-back against William Patterson University in Wayne N.J. Sunday afternoon. The victory improved William Patterson to 3-1 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 1-3.

With the score tied at one with 3:58 remaining, Marissa Horner beat the Juniata defense with a goal to put the home team in front 2-1. Juniata would pressure in the final minutes looking for the equalizer and forced a penalty corner with less than a minute remaining. The corner led to a shot from the Eagles? Sarah Bender (Eastern York/York) which was saved by William Patterson goalie Jessie Mull to secure the victory for the home team. The save was one of 10 stops for Mull in the match.

Juniata took a lead in the first half when the Eagles knocked in their first goal since the team?s season opener. Meredith Low (Sun Valley/Aston) redirected a Bender shot past Mull to put Juniata on top 1-0.

The Pioneers began their comeback with 14:55 remaining when Jodi Nolan scored a goal off a rebound of a shot from Mindy Coxe.

Juniata goalkeeper Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) kept the home team at bay as she made a season-high 11 saves, but could not help Juniata hang on for the victory.

Juniata returns to action with another non-conference match on Thursday at home against Richard Stockton University.
