Field Hockey Claims Conference Win With Clutch Goal

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Sophomore Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) scored a goal with less than five minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie and propel the Juniata College field hockey team to a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over Moravian College in Huntingdon Saturday afternoon. The victory evened Juniata?s conference record at 1-1 and brought its overall mark to 3-5 on the season. Moravian is now 3-6 on the season and 0-3 in conference action.
With the score tied at one Wagner took a pass from Meredith Low (Sun Valley/Aston) and knocked home her second goal of the season to give Juniata the lead with just three-and-half minutes remaining in regulation. The Eagles would then hold on to secure the all-important conference win.
Juniata took an early lead in the match, and controlled play throughout before having to rally late. Michelle Campbell (Northern Lebanon/Annville) beat Moravian keeper Amanda Gaun in the 19th minute to put Juniata in front 1-0. Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs) assisted on the score.
Juniata would continue to look to add to the lead, firing off 15 shots in the first period. But Gaun kept the Greyhounds in the match, making five saves in the first stanza. Juniata keeper Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) was forced to make one critical save in the first half as she stopped a penalty stroke to preserve Juniata?s 1-0 lead.
The Eagles continued to pressure in the second half, but it was Moravian that found the cage next. Jen Gassner knocked in one of just three shots of the half for the vistors, finding the back if the cage with just 10 minutes left in regulation. Stacee Cupple assisted on the goal which left Juniata scrambling for the go-ahead goal with things winding down.
The goal came after Juniata had forced Gaun into another five saves in the half, leaving her with 10 for the match. Way finished with three saves in goal for the Eagles.
Juniata?s next action will be a non-conference match at Villa Julie on Tuesday.
