Late Comeback Foils Soccer Men
(Posted October 5, 2005)
Dickinson 3, Juniata 1
Huntingdon, Pa. ? A one-goal lead mid-way through the second half proved to be not quite enough as the Juniata College men?s soccer team fell to visiting Dickinson College 3-1 in Huntingdon Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles are now 3-8 on the season while the Red Devils improved to 7-4.
After a scoreless first half in which both teams had several scoring chances, it was Juniata that struck first. Kenneth Wiles (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck, N.Y.) put Juniata in front with an unassisted goal in the 48th minute. It was the third goal of the season for Wiles.
Juniata continued to pressure, out-shooting the visitors 8-5 in the second half, but were unable to extend its lead. Tim Penrod (Moravia/Moravia, N.Y.) had two of his six saves in the second half to help preserve the lead.
But the visitors found the answer in the 73rd minute as Matthew Critchlow knocked home the first goal of the match for the Red Devils. Tim Fauquier assisted on the goal.
Just four minutes later Ryan Shera put the visitors in front with an unassisted goal.
The game got continuously more physical as the team?s battled towards the conclusion. The team?s combined for five yellow cards in the second half.
With Juniata pushing for the tying score, the Red Devils added one final score in the final minute when Bobby Malek took advantage of a misplayed clearance and scored the final goal. Rodrigo Barboza had six saves in goal for Dickinson.
Juniata gets back into conference action on Saturday with a match at Commonwealth opponent Albright.
