Washington & Lee 2, Juniata 1 (Penalty Strokes)

Lexington, Va. ? After suffering a tough, double-overtime loss to a nationally ranked team in its last outing, the Juniata College field hockey team was looking to rebound against Washington and Lee. Unfortunately for Juniata, the non-conference game ended in a similarly tough fashion as the Eagles fell by a 2-1 score on penalty strokes in Lexington, Va. Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Eagles to 8-8 on the year while the home team moved its record to 12-5 on the year.

After a scoreless first half, Juniata gave itself a chance to capture the non-conference win as an early-second half goal broke the 0-0 tie and put the Eagles in front. Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Spring) took a pass from Leslie Stern (Red Lion/Felton) and knocked in her fourth goal of the season 12 minutes into the second half.

The Eagles would continue to look to add to its lead, as the Blue and Gold fired off eight shots in the second half. Generals? goalkeeper Courtney Harrison made six saves after coming on at halftime to keep Juniata off the board.
The home team then tied the score in the 59th minute. Washington & Lee took advantage of one of its five second-half penalty corners as Kate Lester found the back of the cage to tie the score. Jane Beall and Kendall Korte assisted on the score.

The teams remained tied through regulation, and then through two 15-minute overtime periods. The home team had the better chances in overtime as Juniata was unable to get off any shots in the extra sessions. However, Juniata keeper Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) made six of her career-high 13 saves in the two overtime periods.

But the match then came down to penalty strokes, where the home team topped the Eagles 3-0. Beall converted the winning stroke for the Generals.

Juniata gets back in action on Sunday with a non-conference match against Bridgewater.
