Soccer Women Drop Tight Match to Top-Ranked Team
(Posted October 26, 2005)
Messiah 3, Juniata 0
Grantham, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s soccer team turned in a fine effort in trying to withstand the offensive attack of top-ranked Messiah, but the Eagles were unable to completely avoid the damage as they dropped a 3-0 decision to the Falcons Wednesday night. Juniata is now 6-11-1 overall and is 0-5 in Commonwealth action.
Juniata keeper Kerri Lawrence (Paramus Catholic/Waldwick, N.J.) made 14 saves to help try and keep Juniata in the match.
Messiah?s Annie Futato scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute off an assist from Hannah Levesque.
Juniata held the home team off the scoreboard the rest of the first half, keeping itself in the game with solid and defense and goalkeeping which have been its staples all season.
The Falcons eventually added to its lead when Levesque got into the scoring column with a goal of her own 10 minutes into the second half. The final tally came in the 80th minute as Rachel Horning knocked the third goal. Ashley Fisher was credited with the assist.
The 14 saves from Lawrence marked a new season high. It was the fourth time this year Juniata?s freshman keeper has stopped at least 10 shots in a match.
Juniata was held without a shot in the match, though the 3-0 score was a far departure from a lopsided set-back the Eagles suffered last season on the road against the Falcons.
Juniata will close the regular season with a conference match at Widener on Saturday.
