Larry Bock and Heather Pavlik Receive NCAA Honor
(Posted November 2, 2005)
Huntingdon, PA - Juniata College women's volleyball Head Coach Larry Bock and former Juniata volleyball standout and current Associate Head Coach Heather Pavlik '95 have both been selected to the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team. The team, which was selected by an expert panel appointed by an NCAA sport committee, consists of six players and two coaches and were selected for their outstanding achievements while competing in NCAA competition. The selection is part of the celebration of the NCAA's 25th season of sponsoring a championship in Division III volleyball.
Pavlik, who was formerly Heather Blough before marrying Penn State University men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik¸ was a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American as a setter for Juniata during the early '90s and held the school record for career assists until the 2004 season. She also ranked as the all-time NCAA Division III leader in assists per game until last season. She holds two of the top-10 highest single-season assist marks in Juniata history, with her career best of 1,719 assists coming in her junior season. She also ranks in the top-10 in school history in serve aces. She was twice selected as the team's most valuable player, and will be inducted in the Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame this coming Saturday.
A native of Johnstown and a graduate of Richland High School, Pavlik helped Juniata reach the NCAA Division III semifinals three times, including a runner-up finish in her junior season. She was twice selected to the NCAA Division III All-Tournament Team. After graduating from Juniata, she returned to the school in 1996 as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball program. She then became Associate Head Coach prior to the 2003 season. During her time as a coach, the Eagles have reached the national semifinals all but one season, and claimed the program's first national championship in 2004.
Bock has been the only head coach in the history of the women's volleyball program, and has built a coaching resume to match anyone in NCAA sports. Now in his 29th season, he has amassed a career record of 1,062-170 good for an .862 career winning percentage. His 1,062 victories are the most of any NCAA women's volleyball coach in any Division. With Bock at the helm the Eagles are the only team that has qualified for every NCAA Division III postseason. The team has reached the national semifinals on 19 occasions, earned five championship match appearances and claimed its first title in 2004.
He has been selected as the AVCA Division III Coach of the year four times, and was inaugural member of the AVCA Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. A 1971 graduate of Penn State, he also coached the Juniata men's volleyball team for six seasons, and earned 100 wins with that team. He also became Juniata's director of athletics in 1995 a position he still holds.
With Bock and Pavlik on the sidelines, Juniata posted a 31-1 record during the 2005 regular season, and is currently ranked second in the CSTV/AVCA Division III Top-25 Poll.
