MEN'S BASKETBALL (4-1, 1-1 Commonwealth): Dec. 5 at Lebanon Valley; Dec. 9 at York (PA).

Juniata split a pair of Commonwealth Conference outings on the week. On Wednesday, the Eagles lost at Albright, 54-51. Freshman forward Ben Gallagher (Butler/Butler) led the blue and gold hoopers with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior point guard Shane Crandall (North Allegheny/Doylestown) chipped in with 17 points, including three three-pointers, and three steals. On Saturday, Juniata hosted Moravian and notched a 75-72 overtime victory over the Greyhounds. Junior guard Brian Dietrich (Wilson/Wyomissing) equaled a career-best by scoring 21 points. He was 4 of 5 from behind the three-point line. Senior forward Nathan Hager (Franklin/Franklin) finished with 14 points, three assists and one steal, while Gallagher posted 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two rejections. Crandall added in 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Junior forward Dave Reddick (North Hills/Pittsburgh) registered a game-best 12 rebounds and tossed in eight points.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING (4-2, 3-2 MAC): Dec. 6, Penn State-Altoona.

The Eagles registered a 2-0 week and moved their unbeaten stretch to four straight dual meets. On Wednesday, Juniata hosted Division II Mansfield and opened the home portion of the 2000-01 schedule with a 110-91 win. The blue and gold tankers trailed heading into the final two events of the day and won both outings to help in the triumph. Sophomore Alissa Schneider (Mililani/Mililani, HI) won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:19.59 and placed third in the 200-meter butterfly (2:40.42). She also took first along with freshman Kim Allen (Susquehanna Township/Harrisburg), junior Jenn Dorsch (Gov. Thomas Johnson/Frederick, MD) and freshman Danielle Irwin (Altoona/Altoona) in the 200-meter medley relay (2:11.42). Irwin also won the 100-meter freestyle (1:04.25). Allen captured the 200-meter breaststroke in a time of 2:38.08. The unit of freshman Gwen Nelmes (Saltsburg/Saltsburg), freshman Anne Gaynor (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks, NY) and freshman Melanie Cegelski (Moon/Moon Township) touched first in the 200-meter freestyle relay (2:07.89) to wrap up the outing. Sophomore Cyndi Long (Emmaus/Emmaus) finished second in the 50-meter freestyle (30.03). On Saturday, Juniata downed Elizabethtown for the first time since 1992 by a count of 106-99. The Eagles were down, 87-82, with two events remaining before winning both outings, including the 100-yard breaststroke by Allen, who clocked in at 1:18.86 (setting a school record in yardage time of 1:10.66). The 200-meter freestyle relay team for Juniata which was made up of Long, Dorsch, Gaynor and Irwin then posted a five-and-a-half second win with a time of 1:58.90. Overall, the Eagles took first place in seven events. Schneider, Allen, Long, and freshman Kim Heckard (Norristown/Norristown) started off the day with a victory in the 200-meter medley relay (2:14.75). Schneider won the 200-meter freestyle (2:15.96) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:11.70). In addition to her first-place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke, Allen touched first in 200-meter individual medley (2:37.76). Irwin won the 100-meter freestyle (1:03.59).



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (2-3, 1-1 Commonwealth): Dec. 6 at Lebanon Valley; Dec. 8, Dickinson.

The Eagles went 1-1 during a week with nothing but Commonwealth Conference opponents on the schedule. On Tuesday, Juniata traveled to Albright and suffered a tough, 75-71, loss to the Lions. Junior forward Brandy Preslovich (Bald Eagle Area/Moshannon), who returned to action for the first time since injuring her wrist and ankle on opening night, led all scorers with 22 points. She also pulled down a game-best 16 rebounds, passed out three assists and had three steals. Sophomore center Kelly Steinbeiser (Altoona/Altoona) came through with 14 points, 14 rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Kelly Grove (Penns Valley/Spring Mills) had eight points and six assists, while junior point guard Kelli Young (United/Vintondale) passed out six assists and had five points. On Saturday, Juniata posted its highest offensive output of the season during a 93-80 win over visiting Moravian. Grove paced the Eagles with a career-best 22 points, including a six of eight showing from behind the three-point line. She also had three steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Steinbeiser recorded 18 points, nine rebounds, three steals, three rejections and one assist. Sophomore guard Jen LaCount (Westmont Hilltop/Johnstown) came off the bench to tally a personal-high 17 points, while dishing out four assists and coming up with three steals. Young went 10 of 12 from the foul line and had 12 points, seven assists and five steals. Preslovich rounded out the double-digit scorers for Juniata with 11 points, in addition to her two blocked shots, two steals and two rebounds.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (33-10, 7-0 Commonwealth): season complete.

Juniata finished fourth in the NCAA Division III championship for the third straight year by falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-0, in the NCAA semifinals and, 3-2, to Washington (MO) in the third-place match over the weekend at Central (IA). On Friday, the Eagles lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 15-10, 15-13, 15-8. Juniata received 14 kills from freshman opposite Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring) and 13 kills from junior outside hitter Brandy Workinger (Dallastown/Dallastown) and sophomore middle hitter Niki Mueller (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona). Mueller posted an impressive .435 hitting percentage, while Hart added in 11 digs and two blocks. Workinger had a team-best 15 digs. Freshman outside hitter Johanna Holtan (Fargo North/Fargo, ND) had 14 digs, eight kills and two aces, sophomore setter Jesse Woods (Bothell/Seattle, WA) distributed 47 assists and had two aces. In the third-place match with Washington on Saturday evening, the Bears claimed a 13-15, 15-13, 15-13, 10-15, 15-12 win over the Eagles. Juniata was led by Workinger, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Eagles with 27 kills, 18 digs and two aces, while Hart added in 17 kills and a .277 hitting percentage. Holtan had 16 kills and 19 digs. Mueller registered 17 kills and eight blocks (four solo). Woods finished with an NCAA championship single-match record 81 assists and she also had 16 digs, three aces and four blocks. Freshman middle hitter Jenn Habel (Glen Oaks/Canton, OH) hit .438 with eight kills on 16 tries and she had three blocks.
