(Posted September 3, 2006)
Juniata 2, Marietta 0 Marietta, Ohio - For the second time in as many days the Juniata College men?s soccer team got a goal shortly before halftime to put itself in good position to earn a victory. But on Sunday against Marietta College the Eagles made sure to finish the deal as the Blue and Gold added another goal in the second half to claim a 2-0 win in the consolation match of the 2006 Marietta Soccer Classic. After playing the first 41 minutes of the first half without a goal, Juniata found the back of the net right before the halftime whistle. Chad A. Weller (Newport/Newport)tallied his first goal of the season off an assist from Christopher Engle (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) to give Juniata a 1-0 advantage. The game remained tight, as both teams battled to create scoring chances. Juniata finished the match with six shots, while Marietta fired off three attempts at the Juniata net. Mark Guthridge (Dubois/Dubois) made six saves in the contest. His play kept Juniata in front until the team could add an insurance goal. That insurance came with nearly half of the second half completed as Jordan McGowan (Greenwood/Millerstown) converted a Fred McNeal (Troy/Towanda) feed and gave the Eagles a 2-0 cushion. Thaddeus Cochran and Steve Hagenau split time in goal for Marietta with Cochran making two saves and Hagenau making one. The Eagles also placed two players on the All-Tournament Team as senior defender Will Marshall (Upper Perkiomen/Pennsburg) and Mark Turkewitz (Dallastown/York) claimed that honor. Juniata gets back in action Thursday afternoon with a road match against Mount Aloysius. ###
