(Posted September 3, 2006)
Juniata 2, Mount Union 0 Marietta, Ohio. ? Two first half goals and a solid defensive effort were enough for the Juniata College women?s soccer team to secure its first victory of the 2006 season as the Eagles downed Mount Union College 2-0 on the final day of the 2006 Marietta Soccer Classic. With the two-goal win, Juniata earned a second-place finish in the tournament based on aggregate goals, with the Eagles finishing one goal ahead of host Marietta. The Eagles did all of their scoring prior to intermission in the contest. Maura Collins (Corning-Painted Post West/Painted Post, N.Y.) scored Juniata?s first goal of the season as she converted a Heather McMinn (Indian Valley/Reedsville) pass in the 13th minute to put Juniata in front 1-0. The Blue and Gold added to that lead 11 minutes later with senior Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) finding the back of the net to put Juniata in front 2-0. Sarah Ruggiero (Bangor/Bangor) assisted on the second goal. The Eagles carried the play throughout, as they finished with 10 shots in the match compared to seven for Mount Union. Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) made six stops for the Eagles in goal to earn her first shutout of the 2006 season. Mount Union keeper Seana Kelly stopped eight shots while playing all 90 minutes in net. Juniata?s play earned the team a pair of spots on the All-Tournament Team. Defender Kelly Howard (Bishop McCort/Johnstown) and midfielder Laura Goodlander (Red Land/Red Land) were both selected for All-Tournament honors. Juniata returns to action next Saturday Sept. 9 with a match at Pitt-Bradford. ###
