Field Hockey Posts Another Shutout
(Posted September 9, 2006)
Juniata 3, Bridgewater 0 Huntingdon, Pa. - Juniata?s defense was again the story as it posted its third consecutive shutout of the season on their way to defeating Bridgewater College 3-0 at Winton Hill Field. Juniata now improves to 3-0 on the season, while Bridgewater College falls to 0-3 on the year. Juniata came out on the offensive recording good scoring chances in both the fourth and sixth minute to start the game. Bridgewater goalie Elizabeth Sullivan came up with four huge saves to keep the Juniata offense at bay and keep the game scoreless. Throughout the first 15 minutes of the game the Blue and Gold controlled the action keeping pressure on the Bridgewater defense. Late in the first quarter the Eagles finally broke through as Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) scored on an assist from Meredith Low (Sun Valley/Aston) to get the Eagles on the board. That would be all the offense the Eagles would need as goalie Abby Funk (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) posted her third straight shutout of the season. Wagner tallied her second goal of the game and team leading eight of the season five minutes into the second half. She ripped a shot from the right side past the Bridgewater goalie to extend the Eagles led to 2-0. Juniata scored its last goal when Heather Hassinger?s (Middleburg/Middleburg) shot was saved and Michelle Campbell (Northern Lebanon/Annville) got the rebound and found the back of the net to cap the Juniata scoring. Bridgewater regrouped with a timeout with 23 minutes of the game remaining, and the visitors began to bring the attack to Juniata. But the Juniata defense hung on to claim the third-consecutive shutout. It marks the first time since the 2004 season that Juniata has recorded shutouts in three-consecutive matches, and is the first time in the program?s history that the team has not allowed a goal in the first three games of the season. Juniata will look to keep its shutout streak going as the team travels to play at Neumann on Tuesday. ###
