Soccer Women Come Up Short Against Carnegie Mellon
(Posted September 16, 2006)
Carnegie Mellon 3, Juniata 0 PITTSBURGH, Pa ? After earning a thrilling overtime victory earlier in the week, the Juniata College women?s soccer team was hoping it could carry that momentum into its non-conference match at Carnegie Mellon Saturday evening. But a stout defensive effort from the home team quelled that momentum as the Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision to Carnegie Mellon. Juniata dropped to 4-2 with the set-back while the Tartans are now 2-2-1 on the season. Juniata just could not get its offense going in the contest, despite putting together a solid defensive effort. The Eagles were limited to one shot in the match, while Carnegie Mellon fired off 14 shots. But Juniata?s defense kept the home team off the scoreboard for awhile as keeper Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) made an early save to keep the game scoreless. The home team then broke through in the 28th minute when Kasey Stever received a Lisa Pascoli pass in the box and chipped it past Russo to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Carnegie Mellon added to its advantage in the 53rd minute with Abigail Coffin heading home a Amanda Rose cross that made the score 2-0. The final score came with just two minutes left as Stever converted her second goal of the match, this time knocking home a loose ball in the box to seal the 3-0 win. Russo would add another three saves in the second half to bring her total for the game to four. Christie Adams made one stop in net for Carnegie Mellon. Juniata will play another non-conference match on Sunday as the Eagles take on Franciscan. ###
