Soccer Men Fall In Overtime to Dickinson
(Posted October 4, 2006)
Dickinson 3, Juniata 2 (OT) CARLISLE, Pa. â?? In a wild, back-and-forth contest the Juniata College men\'s soccer team found itself once again on the short end of a tough loss as the Eagles dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Dickinson College in Carlisle Wednesday night. The loss dropped Juniata to 5-7 on the season while Dickinson improved to 6-5. After Dickinson tied the score at two goals apiece in the 72nd minute, the teams played even soccer for 35 minutes until Andy Rowek scored the game winner in the second 10-minute sudden death overtime session to give the Red Devils the win. Matt Kurteson assisted on the game-winning goal. The home team was forced to come from behind after Juniata stormed out of the gates and controlled much of the first half. The Eagles struck first when Andrew Steffen (Red Land/Lewisberry) converted a Rio Tomlin (Keystone Oaks/Pittsburgh) pass in the 12th minute to put Juniata on top 1-0. Tomlin was not done making an impact as the freshman, who was making his first collegiate start, found the back of the net himself at the 26:19 mark to give Juniata a 2-0 cushion. Andrew Hepner (Shikellamy/Northumberland) assisted on the goal. The Eagles would take that 2-0 lead into halftime. But the home team came out firing early in the second half, as they cut into the Juniata lead less than three minutes after intermission. Rowek notched his first goal of the contest, this time unassisted, at 47:44 to make the score 2-1. The Red Devils continued to pressure, outshooting Juniata 10-3 in the second half, but Juniata keeper Brian Trinclisti (Lewistown/Lewistown) made four saves in the second period to keep the Devils at bay for a little while. Trinclisti came on at halftime in relief of Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) who made two saves in the second half. Dickinson finally broke through again in the 72nd minute when Cooper Morris found the back of the net to get the equalizer. Neither team could solve the opposing defense for the remainder of regulation or the first overtime period, until Rowek struck again in the second overtime. Trinclisti finished with five saves overall, while Dickinson keeper Rodrigo Barboza and James Van Meerbeke combined for two saves. Barboza played the first 39 minutes and surrendered both goals, while Van Meerbeke went the rest of the way and had both saves. Juniata will try and get back into the win column on Saturday when the Eagles face Albright College in a Commonwealth Conference match on Homecoming Weekend in Huntingdon. ###
