Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball To Win

Huntingdon, Pa - The Juniata College womenâ??s volleyball team played its last regular-season conference home match in the Commonwealth Conference Wednesday defeating Messiah 3-0. With the win the Eagles improve to 27-1, and 6-0 in the conference, while the Falcons drop to 10-13, and 2-4 in the conference. Juniata\'s last loss in conference play was November 11, 1981 and the Eagles hold the NCAA volleyball record for longest conference winning streak. Juniata claimed the match by game scores of 30-14, 30-13 and 30-19. This season marks Juniata\'s final year in the Commonwealth Conference as the Eagles will be joining the newly-formed Landmark Conference in 2007. The Eagles have now secured either first or second place in the conference standings which will give them at least one home conference postseason match. Juniata was able to get everyone involved offensively in the match while the Eagles defense was able to hold the Falcons to a .000 hitting percentage in game one and followed that up in games two and three by limiting the Falcons offense to .065 and .067 hitting percentages over the last two games. Freshman Michelle Morchesky (Hempfield/Greensburg) led all hitters as she registered nine kills on the evening while Amber Thomas (Conestoga Valley/ Ephrata) contributed eight. Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, MD) hit .857 in just two games while pounding six kills. Beth Kozak (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) guided the Blue and Gold offense dishing out 41 assists to 11 different Eagle attackers. On the defense side Meghan Sollenberger (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) brought up 14 digs to lead all Juniata defenders while added a service aces. Amy Stabler led the Falcons offensive as she had seven kills on the night. Defensively for Messiah Karen Freidhoff recorded seven digs in the match. The Eagles have one more conference game remaining as they close in on their 26th consecutive Commonwealth conference regular season crown. The Eagles are back in action this weekend when they host the Juniata Invitational to be played this Friday and Saturday. ###
