Eagles Volleyball Sweeps Etown To In Conference Finale

Juniata 3, Elizabethtown 0 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - In a match-up of the top two teams in the Commonwealth Conference, the Juniata College women\'s volleyball team clinched home court advantage for next week\'s Commonwealth postseason by earning a 3-0 victory over Elizabethtown College Tuesday night. Juniata closes the conference season unbeaten for a remarkable 25th-consecutive season and improves to 31-1 overall. Elizabethtown fell to 22-5 with the loss and are now 6-1 in the conference. Juniata rode a balanced offensive attack and a sharp serving game to the 30-14, 30-11, 30-25 victory. The Eagles had four players finish with six or more kills, and tossed in 13 serve aces to just four serve errors. Amber Thomas (Conestoga Valley/Ephrata) paced Juniata with 10 kills and also had a pair of serve aces and six digs. Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md.) chipped in with nine kills while hitting .462 and led all players with four blocks. Erin Albert (Philipsburg-Osceola/Philipsburg) and Rachael Schatz (West Perry/Elliotsburg) each added six finishes apiece for the Eagles. Reigning Commonwealth Volleyball Player of the Week Beth Kozak (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) passed out 30 assists in the contest, and was one of three Eagles to register three serve aces. Jessica Ritchey (Greencastle-Antrim/Greencastle) and Megan Sollenberger (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) both also recorded three aces on the night. Sollenberger also led all players with 12 digs. Ashley Whitmarsh and Paige Tanner were the top attackers for the Blue Jays as each had seven kills. Kate Scanlan finished with eight digs to pace the Blue Jays and Kelly Downs led the team with three blocks. Stacey Wasserman finished with 18 assists while directing the Elizabethtown attack. Juniata and Elizabethtown will be the first and second seeds, respectively when the Commonwealth postseason begins next Wednesday. Each team will host a semifinal match against an opponent still to be determined. Juniata will be back in action this coming weekend when the Eagles travel to Atlanta, Ga. to take on nationally-ranked Emory University. ###
