Men Win Basketball Opener

Juniata 88, Franciscan 54 HUNTINGDON, Pa. â?? A blistering shooting performance from the field was more than enough to help the Juniata College men\'s basketball team claim an 88-54 win over Franciscan University on the opening night of the 2006 Mutual Benefit Group \"Doc\" Greene Tip-Off Tournament. Juniata (1-0), will now face Bethany College (W.V.) in the championship game of the tournament, after Bethany outlasted Penn State-Altoona in double overtime. Franciscan fell to 1-4 with the loss. Six different Juniata players scored seven or more points as the Eagles shot 57 percent from the field for the game, including a 66 percent performance in the second half. Brent Ferko (Freeport/Sarver) paced Juniata with 16 points, while Neil Holloway (Tussey Mountain/Saxton) and Aaron Chamberlain (Tussey Mountain/Wood) each added 12. The Eagles never trailed in the game and used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to take a comfortable 16-point advantage. Franciscan would pull back within nine but a late three from Chamberlain sent the Blue and Gold into the locker room leading by 16. The lead grew quickly in the opening stages of the second-half as a three-point play from Brian Cannon (Fallston/Fallston, Md.) put Juniata on top by 26 with 13:03 to go. The Eagles never looked back, extending the lead to as much as 36 before earning the victory. Juniata executed well in its offense as the team piled up 22 assists on its 32 made field goals. Chris Jasiota (Oil City/Oil City) led the team with five assists, while also pacing the squad with eight rebounds. Holloway added seven boards for Juniata to go with his 12 points. Nathan Stanton led all players with 23 points in the contest as he was 6-11 from three-point range on the game. Franciscan was 11-32 from behind the arc in the contest. Curtis Allen was also in double figures with 13 points for the Barons, and he grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Kevin Allen was the team\'s top play maker with three assists. ###
