(Posted December 12, 2006)
YORK, Pa. - A tough defensive effort from the home team was too much for the Juniata College men\'s basketball team to overcome as the Eagles dropped a 70-57 non-conference game against York College (Pa.) Tuesday evening. The loss dropped Juniata to 4-4 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 5-3. Brian Cannon (Fallston/Fallston, Md.) scored 19 points off the bench for Juniata, including 11 in the second half as the Eagles tried to overcome an eight-point first-half deficit. York extended the lead to 14 points in the early going after a hoop from Chad McGowan. Juniata answered with a three and a hoop from Cannon cut the lead to nine with 14:37 left in the game. But York countered with an 8-0 run that extended the lead to 17 with 11:08 to play. Juniata pulled within 12 after another Cannon basket with 6:16 remaining, but that was as close as Juniata would get. Juniata was limited to 29 percent shooting in the game and hit just 26 percent from three-point range in the game. The Eagles were 8-29 from the field in the first half as York built a 10-point lead in the first six minutes of the contest. The Spartans built the lead to 15 in the half, but a three from Eric Mueseler (Latrobe/Latrobe) and a basket from Cannon brought Juniata within eight, which is where the lead would be going into halftime. Cannon was in double figures for the Blue and Gold for the seventh-consecutive game as he was 6-17 from the field and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Kyle Opitz (Pine-Richland/Gibsonia) was also in double figures for Juniata with 11 points. Aaron Chamberlain (Tussey Mountain/Wood) and Nick Hager (Franklin/Franklin) each had three assists for Juniata. McGowan became the 18th York player to score 1,000 points in his career and had a game-high 29 points along with 11 rebounds. Nate Lankford scored 13 points with eight rebounds for the Spartans. Joe Yeck and Nick Brady added 11 and 10 points respectively. Yeck had a team-high six assists for the home team. Juniata will be back in action on Dec. 29 when the Eagles open play at a tournament at Case Western Reserve University. ###
