Juniata College

(Posted March 5, 2007)

Chandler, Ariz. - The Juniata College baseball team got a pair of impressive offensive performances to earn their first wins of the 2007 season as the Eagles swept the College of Misericordia by scores of 15-0 and 12-5. Juniata improved to 2-3 with the wins. Juniata pounded out 26 hits over the two games to earn the victories. In game one, Juniata got five solid innings from starter Jason Enoch (Hempfield/Landisville) and then exploded offensively late in the game to earn the win. Both teams were held off the scoreboard over the first three innings, but then Juniata broke out with an eight-run fourth inning to take a big lead. The Eagles then chipped on five runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to cap the scoring. Enoch went five innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Brian Markovich (Northern Cambria/Northern Cambria) each pitched an inning of scoreless relief to complete the shutout. Kevin Small (Wheaton North/Wheaton, Ill.), Corey Poff (Red Lion/Red Lion) and Andrew Kriss (John Carroll/Forest Hills, Md.) each finished with three hits for the Blue and Gold. In game two, Juniata pushed across three runs in the top of the first to quickly take control of the game. After Misericordia responded with a home run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2, but the Eagles countered with six runs in the third to take a commanding 9-2 edge. That was enough to help Kyle Helm (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) earn his first collegiate victory as the freshman went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Small was again the catalyst for Juniata offensively as he knocked out another three hits, giving him six hits over the two games. Dan Kauffman (Penn Manor/Lancaster) was 2-for-4 in the game with four RBI, while Ian Thorne (Seneca Valley/Germantown, Md.) and Ben Yeager (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown) both also had a pair of hits. Juniata will be back in action on Tuesday with full nine-inning games against Lake Erie College and DeSales University. ###
