Strong All-Around Effort Leads Softball
(Posted March 7, 2007)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - For the third-consecutive day the Juniata College softball team split its two games during its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. as the Eagles topped Grace College 5-0 but suffered a tough 1-0 set-back to SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday. The Eagles are now 3-3 on the season after the split. Juniata started the day by dropping the pitcher\'s duel against Oneonta, but rebounded with a strong all-around effort in the win over Grace. It took the Eagles until the fifth inning of their second game to push across any runs, but the team scored three in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. That was all freshman pitcher Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) needed as she went all seven innings to pick up the win. She scattered four hits and fanned four in the game to claim the victory. Juniata added to the winning total in the seventh when Rachel Nagy (Nazareth/Nazareth) belted a two-run home run to give the Eagles the winning margin of 5-0. Nagy finished with three hits in the game as she had a pair of singles to with her home run. Liz Schmitt (H. Frank Carey/Franklin Square, N.Y.) had a pair of hits in the game, and Tara Carl (Otto-Eldred/Duke Center) scored twice. In game one, the Eagles got a solid pitching performance from Elsann Machotka (South Regional/Manahwakin, N.J.) but could not muster enough offense. Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the Oneonta pushed across its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles were then unable to counter in the top of the seventh. Machotka went all six innings, allowing seven hits and striking out one. Juniata was limited to a pair of hits in the game as Carl and Schmitt each had one single. The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they face Bridgewater College and Catawba College.
