ANTHEM, Ariz. - The Juniata College baseball team overcame a Beloit College rally to earn a 12-6 victory in extra innings Thursday afternoon in Anthem, Ariz. After dropping its first three games of 2007 Juniata has now captured five consecutive wins to improve to 5-3. Juniata scored six times in the top of the 10th inning to claim the victory after Beloit battled back from a 6-0 deficit to send the game into extra frames. Cory Poff (Red Lion/Red Lion) drove in the first run of the 10th with an RBI single, and then after two Beloit errors extended the frame, Ian Thorne (Seneca Valley/Germantown, Md.) drove in two runs with a single to help put the result out of reach. Jeff Hayes (Indian Valley/Lewistown) pitched the bottom of 10th to earn the win. Juniata seemed to have the game completely under control when the Blue and Gold scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Jordan Reitz (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) and Dane Ott (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) each drove in two runs with singles in the inning, and an error led to two more unearned runs for Juniata. Beloit answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Schmitz delivered a grand slam to pull Beloit within two. Those were the only runs Eagles hurler Brian Markovich (Northern Cambria/Northern Cambria) allowed as he went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five. Beloit then scored one run in the eighth to pull within one. Hayes came on in the eighth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam, but then surrendered an RBI single from Scott Slubowski to tie the game and go to extra innings. Reitz paced Juniata offensively has he knocked out three hits with two RBI and a run. Ben Yeager (Owen J. Roberts/Pottstown) also had three hits and he scored twice. Three others finished with three hits in the game as Juniata finished with 16 hits in the game. Juniata will return to action on Friday with games against Aurora and Concordia. ###
