Baseball Claims First Conference Victory

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Junior Andrew Snyder (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) tossed a complete-game four hitter to help the Juniata College baseball team capture its first conference win of the year as the Eagles downed Moravian College 7-1 Friday afternoon in Huntingdon. Snyder allowed one run on four hits while striking out four for Juniata (8-8-1, 1-2-1 Commonwealth) which broke the game open with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Moravian (6-8, 3-2 Commonwealth) dropped its second straight conference game after opening the year 3-0 in Commonwealth action Dane Ott (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) was 4-for-5 on the game with three RBI and two runs scored to pace the Juniata offense which knocked out 11 hits in the contest. Juniata got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A walk and a double put runners at second and third with two outs, and an error from the shortstop brought home a pair of unearned runs. Moravian answered with one run in the top of the second. The Greyhounds put runners on second and third with one out. An infield groundout from Kevin Gambrino pulled Moravian within one, but Snyder worked out of the jam without further damage. Snyder was in control from there as he allowed just five base runners over the final seven innings. Moravian did not put two runners on base in any inning after the second. The Eagles tacked on another run in the fourth. Andrew Kriss (John Carroll/Forest Hill, Md.) doubled to lead off the frame and Jordan Reitz (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) brought him home with a two-out single through the left side. Juniata extended the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the fifth as Ott and Kriss each produced RBI singles. Ott then drove in another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when he knocked a double off the centerfield wall, giving Juniata a 7-1 lead. Matthew Swartz was charged with the loss for the Greyhounds as he surrendered six runs, four earned over five innings of work. He gave up six hits on the day. Richard Schultz tossed three innings of relief for Moravian, allowing one run on five hits. Kriss finished the day with a pair of hits, one RBI and one run scored. Reitz was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Dan Kauffman (Penn Manor/Conestoga) had one hit and scored twice. Christopher Rue had two of Moravian\'s four hits on the day, while Joseph Durso was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Juniata and Moravian will be back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Moravian. ###
