The Chestnut Brass Company, which began in 1977 as a Philadelphia street band, presents a rousing program that combines jazzy arrangements, uplifting marching band music and classical and modern selections. Contemporary composers who have written pieces for the group include, Peter Schickele, Leslie Bennett, Jan Krzywicki and Paul Basler. In addition to playing instruments familiar to even the most casual music-lover, such as trumpet, tuba and trombone, the group specializes in playing ancient and antique instruments such as cornetti, sackbut, keyed bugles and saxhorns. \"The Chestnut Brass Company has a remarkable ability to connect with its audience in such a way that anything -- even modern music -- is enjoyable,\" wrote a music critic in the Albuquerque (N.M.) Journal. The members of the group are: Bruce Barrie, trumpet and other instruments, plays with several ensembles; John Charles Thomas, trumpet, plays on various symphonies; Marian Hesse, horn, is professor of horn at the University of Colorado; Larry Zimmer, trombone, plays with several Minnesota-based orchestras; and Jay Krush, tuba, plays with the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra and teaches tuba at Temple University.
