HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Wind Symphony and High School Honors Band will perform a variety of classical compositions at a concert at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 15 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.
The concert tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for senior citizens and children under age 18, and Juniata students get in free. The Juniata Wind Symphony is conducted by James Latten, assistant professor of music and director of the Wind Symphony.
The concert will feature guest artist Tony Clements, who plays tuba in the San Jose (California) Symphony Orchestra. A guest conductor, Chad Simons, a music professor at the University of New Mexico, will also lead the ensemble in several selections.
The Symphony will open the program by performing a new composition, \"Mambo Furioso.\" The piece is written by Brant Karrick, director of bands at the University of Toledo in Ohio. Juniata woodwind instructor David Lewis will conduct his own arrangement of \"Horkstow Grange\" taken from British composer Percy Grainger\'s composition \"Lincolnshire Posy.\"
Soloist Clements will perform a tuba concerto written by British composer Edward Gregson. Guest conductor Simon will lead the ensemble through Gustav Holst\'s \"Second Suite for Military Band in F.\"
Each accepted member of the High School Honors Band (35 students were chosen) will spend practice time in an assigned chamber music group. \"The experience of one-on-a-part playing is crucial not only for musical reasons but also historical reasons,\" says Latten. \"Full band music is only part of the repertoire for winds and percussion.\"
