(Posted September 20, 2007)
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Freshman Katie Young (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) scored in the second minute of overtime to lift Juniata College to a 1-0 win over Lycoming College, in women\'s soccer action Thursday night in Williamsport, Pa. Freshman teammate Caitlin Bigelow (La Mesa, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) began the play, drawing in two defenders as she moved toward the goal. Bigelow eventually shook the defenders, and passed to Young who was moving toward the goal. Bigelow\'s cross found Young as she entered the 18-yard box, and Young one-timed it off her left foot and past Lycoming keeper Jessica Bennett. The Eagles logged their third consecutive shutout in the win over Lycoming, with Juniata keeper Lisa Russo (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland) extending her shutout streak to 415 minutes. Russo was credited with three saves for the evening, while Bennett recorded two saves for Lycoming. Juniata (6-1-1, 0-0-0 Landmark) earned the win despite resting much of the regular starting lineup, prior to the start of Landmark Conference play this weekend against Moravian College. Five players made their first start of the season in the win over the Warriors. \"We had some players who normally don\'t play a lot get some minutes tonight, and they played well. It was a top-to-bottom win,\" said Juniata head coach Scott McKenzie. \"The depth of our roster and the quality on our roster really shone through tonight.\" Lycoming outshot Juniata 11-3, and the Warriors had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Each team was whistled twice for offsides. This was the first time in the last eight meetings between the two schools that the visiting team has come away with the victory. The Eagles return to action this Saturday when they head to Bethlehem, Pa., to face Moravian College. The game will be the Landmark Conference opener for both squads.
