Juniata to play host to ranked opponents in Wid Guisler Invitational
(Posted October 18, 2007)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Juniata College will play host to some of the top women\'s volleyball teams in Division III during this weekend\'s \"Wid\" Guisler Invitational tournament, which runs Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center. Participating in this year\'s \"Wid\" Guisler tourney will be seventh-ranked University of La Verne, 11th-ranked Cal State-East Bay, Carnegie Mellon University, and Eastern University, in addition to the second-ranked Juniata Eagles as the host squad. Matches will take place both in Memorial Gym, as well as the court in Kennedy\'s Intramural Gym. The highlight match of the weekend figures to be the clash between Juniata and La Verne, which will take place on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. in Memorial Gym. This will be the second match of the season between the Eagles and the Leopards; the two teams met earlier this season at Washington University\'s (Mo.) Teri Clemens Invitational, with Juniata posting a four-game win, 30-23, 31-29, 29-31, and 33-31. The Leopards arrive in Huntingdon with an 18-5 overall record. Prior to the Juniata-La Verne matchup, the Juniata College women\'s volleyball program will recognize four women\'s volleyball alumnae from the Class of 1983 for their achievements as players and for building a foundation for the long-time success of Juniata volleyball: Sue MacLachlan Walton, Colleen Irelan, Claudia Tweardy Serfass, and Susan Barker-Hildebrandt. Between games two and three of the Juniata-La Verne contest, Juniata College faculty members Andy and Terry Murray will be recognized for their contributions to Juniata women\'s volleyball through the years. Cal State-East Bay (Cal State-Hayward prior to 2005) will be making its first appearance on the opposite side of the net from Juniata. The Pioneers enter the tournament with a 24-2 record, and are ranked number one in the West Region. Carnegie Mellon brings a 15-10 record into the \"Wid\" Guisler, while Eastern University also currently holds a 15-10 record. Juniata and Eastern will also be facing each other for the second time this season; the Eagles downed Eastern in three games, 30-17, 30-17, and 30-20, back on September 29 in St. Davids, Pa. The tournament is named in honor of William M. \"Wid\" Guisler, a life-long resident of Huntingdon who passed away on September 13, 1994. A graduate of Huntingdon Area High School and Juniata College\'s Class of 1930, Guisler was active in local civic affairs and retired as sales manager and national accounts executive for Mead Corporation\'s Blair Division. He remained active in the Juniata College community through its alumni group, and was an avid supporter of Juniata athletics - in particular the women\'s volleyball program.
