Juniata Hosts Saxophonist for Instrumental Concert

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Wind Symphony will perform a concert with guest soloist Dale Underwood, a saxophonist formerly with the U.S. Navy Band, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts. The concert, which also includes the Juniata Sinfonia, is free and open to the public. Among the Wind Symphony selections to be performed at the concert are \"Fantasia for Alto Saxophone,\" \"Persuasion,\" by Sammy Nestico, \"American Elegy,\" by Frank Ticheli, and \"Highlights from West Side Story.\" Dale Underwood, a recently retired alto saxophonist with the U.S. Navy Band, will be part of Juniata College\'s \"Saxophone Weekend,\" in which Juniata and local high school students will get the chance to play in several ensembles over the weekend Friday, Dec. 7 through Sunday, Dec. 9. Abigail Kress, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., will be the featured soloist on \"Persuasion.\" The Sinfonia will perform \"Scarborough Fair/Canticle\" and \"Romance for Strings and Piano,\" written by David Lewis, adjunct lecturer in music at Juniata. A string quartet will perform Luigi Boccherini\'s \"String Quartet, Op. 40, No. 3.\" The quartet is violinists Aggie Kwon, of Enola, Pa.; Emily Tagliati, of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; cellist Liana James of Boulder, Colo. and violist Debbie Trudeau, adjunct lecturer in music. The Sinfonia will finish its selections with \"Concerto Grosso No. 8,\" by Arcangelo Corelli, and \"Chorale from Church Cantata No. 147\" by Johann Sebastian Bach. Dale Underwood is professor of music at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va. He joined the faculty in 1999 and also has taught at George Mason University and the University of Maryland. As a soloist with the U.S. Navy band, he played for every U.S. president since Lyndon Johnson. He has performed with numerous symphonies and orchestras across the country, including the Boston Pops, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Wind Orchestra. He was awarded the Presidential Meritorious Service Medal by President Bill Clinton in 1997. The Instrumental Weekend starts Friday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. with registration and an Honors Quartet rehearsal with Underwood at 3:30. The Honors Quartet will also perform with the Juniata Wind Symphony.
