HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Juniata College forward Brian Cannon (Fallston, Md./Fallston) poured in a career-high 33 points to lead the Eagles to an 80-63 win over Westminster College, in men's basketball action Monday night at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center in Huntingdon, Pa. Cannon went 16-of-22 from the field and was 1-of-3 at the line to lead all scorers in the game. Juniata (3-1, 0-0 Landmark) held a one-point lead at the half, 37-36, after coming back from a three-point deficit earlier in the opening frame. Westminster held a 14-11 lead at the 14:33 mark, but the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, with guard Eric Mueseler (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) scoring five points during that stretch. The Eagle lead reached its widest at eight points, 32-24 with 3:16 remaining in the opening frame, before a 12-5 Westminster run cut the margin to one by the intermission. The two teams traded the lead five times in the first six minutes of the second half, before the Eagles took the lead for good with 14:05 remaining on a Garrett Bull (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) three-pointer. That trey launched a 15-0 Juniata run that expanded the Eagle lead to 64-50 at the 7:19 mark, effectively putting the game beyond reach. Westminster would get no closer than eight points, 68-60 with 4:36 remaining, following a trey by Craig Hannon and a foul shot by Ryne Murray. Juniata shot .524 (33-63) from the field, its best shooting performance of the young season. Kyle Opitz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) was the only other Juniata player in double-figures with 15 points, behind a 3-of-4 effort from three-point range. The Eagles outrebounded Westminster 45-32, led by Cannon with eight boards. Westminster (0-5, 0-0 PAC) was just 35.9% from the floor, including a 12-of-43 clip (.279) from three-point range. Hannon was 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, and finished with a team-high 22 points. Chauncey Whitlow chipped in with 10 points with four treys. Ryne Murray logged the double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Juniata returns to action on Wednesday night, when the Eagles travel to Grove City, Pa., to face the Grove City College Wolverines. -30-
