(Posted January 14, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College sophomore guard Jeff Berkey (Stoystown, Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek) has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, for the week ending January 13, 2008.
Berkey averaged 16.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while helping lead the Eagles to a 3-0 week, including wins over previously 10-2 Moravian College and conference preseason favorite University of Scranton.
In the 95-90 overtime win against the Greyhounds, Berkey made the game-tying layup with 8.8 seconds left in regulation; in the OT period, he drained a three-pointer to give Juniata the lead with 1:35 remaining, then went 4-of-4 at the free-throw line to help preserve the win. Berkey finished with 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including a 5-of-9 clip from three-point range.
Against Scranton, Berkey hit another clutch three-pointer in the second half, pulling the Eagles to within one point of the Royals and allowing Juniata to take the lead just moments later.
Berkey went a perfect 11-of-11 at the free-throw line over the three games, and shot .560 (14-25) from the field. He was .600 (9-15) from beyond the arc.
Juniata is currently tied for second in the Landmark Conference standings with a 2-1 league record, 9-5 overall. The Eagles will host the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Drew University this Friday and Saturday at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center in Huntingdon, Pa.
